Mmm Mmm yummy!! This last week the Junior Chef club enjoyed making strawberry and banana smoothies. While making the smoothies we had the opportunity to learn about calcium, and calcium intake. Get your calcium wiith our Sweet Smoothies….

Today out at Squaxin we started a club, called the Junior Chef Club. We had lots of fun brain storming ideas on what we want our club to be like. Over the next 8 weeks we will have lots of fun learning healthy eating habits that we can take home to our families. Enjoy and stay tuned…..

Mmm Mmm Kabobs

Today we made Kool Kabobs out at Sqauxin. If you want to cool off with a tasty treat, or just have a yummy snack that kids love, try these easy to make Fruit Kabobs. Its as easy as 1,2,3!

WSU Food $ense is happy to announce that Santana Mesplie-Sanchez is our new face at Squaxin Island Tribe, and a familiar face at that.

Hello everyone! I am very happy and excited to be working with the children again. They are our future and I enjoy their company too. I am looking forward to getting the children involved in the hands on experience of making tasty after school snacks. Stop by and say hi or even join in on the fun!! See ya’ll around.

Because of their high nutrient content, eating dry beans and peas is recommended for everyone, vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. Enjoy some beans and rice, a three bean salad or split pea soup… or try our bean dip at home.

On Tuesday, we made a white bean dip with the kids and served it with crackers and carrots – a great snack! Try it at home:  White Bean Dip

What’s your family’s favorite bean dish? Please share!

The weather is great, kids are out of school, take some time to have some simple, active fun with your family.  Here are a few suggestions…  I’m sure you can come up with many more.

  • Go on a family bike ride or walk.
  • Play with the kids – tumble in the leaves, build a snowman, splash in a puddle, or dance to favorite music.
  • Walk, skate, or cycle more, and drive less.
  • Take the whole family on a tour of a local museum, zoo or historic site.
  • Best wishes for a healthy, happy holidays!

    Try This at Home!

Kids really enjoy cooking up their own snacks and are often more willing to try new foods if they’ve had a hand in cooking them.  Today they made individual Pocket Fruit Pies with apples. Get the recipe here.

    Get Physical

Make physical activity fun for the whole family and involve your children in the planning. Walk, run, and play with your children – instead of sitting on the sidelines… they will love you for it!

This week students made individual servings of Ole Frijoles Dip… which they renamed “Fantastic Frijoles”.  This healthy snack is made with non-fat refried beans, salsa and a bit of cheese and is both tasty and filling. View the recipe here, or get a printable version Ole Frijoles Dip.

This week we used Better Baking Mix to make pancakes, added blueberries as they cooked,  and served them with unsweetened applesauce instead of syrup.

What makes the mix “better” is that half the flour in the mix is whole grain, and the recipe uses oil instead of solid fat. Better baking mix: Pancakes
